Joomla Versions

Since its first release in 2005, Joomla has been growing in popularity, and consistently increasing its user and developer base. Joomla CMS platform has benefited enormously by gaining respect and popularity of a vibrant open-source development community.

Like any successful open-source software, over time Joomla has undergone a number of revisions, as well as a significant new version release. This is good news, as it means that this CMS platform is growing and improving as it gets older.

Even though Joomla is evolving and updating, it is important to note that this is a mature and well tested system, used by multitude of sites belonging to private companies, NGOs, and even large international organizations.

Below you can find a short explanation of each version, some of their history and advantages:

 

Joomla 1.0

The original release of Joomla was on August 17, 2005, and it is still in use even today. It was an alternative development stemming from an older MAMBO CMS. This version of Joomla has undergone a number of revisions, and is a very stable system. Because of the age of this version, it has an advantage (at the time of writing this article) of having the largest pool of available resources, extensions and modules.

Another benefit to the maturity of this release is that it has been very thoroughly tested in the real-world application – known issues have been ironed out, and the final release is a very polished piece of software.

The drawback of this version is that it is no longer current, and as time progresses it will lose more developers, while its extensions and add-ons will be superseded by new releases aimed at later versions of Joomla.

Joomla 1.5

Joomla 1.5 and its 1.5.XX revisions is the current, latest version of Joomla. This stable version has been available since 2008, and is the best available Joomla release at the moment. The best and latest extensions are written for Joomla 1.5.

This incarnation of Joomla CMS has been around long enough, and is used widely enough, to consider it a stable, well tested and proven system.

A large number of our current clients are using this version, arguably the best CMS system in the world.

 

Joomla 1.6

A few months ago, a beta version of a new Joomla 1.6 was released for testing and comments by developer’s community.  This is still early days, but we are very excited by this new development, and will adopt Joomla 1.6 as soon as a stable release is available.
